The expiry date is the last day the manufacturer guarantees full potency and safety under normal storage.
What can go wrong after expiry
- Reduced potency — your dose simply doesn't work
- Breakdown into harmful by-products (rare but real)
- Loss of preservative effect in syrups and eye drops
When to be strict
Antibiotics, insulin, nitroglycerin and eye drops should never be used past expiry. For these, even one day late is too late.
