Medicines to avoid during pregnancy

Common over-the-counter medicines that are not safe in pregnancy, and safer alternatives to ask your doctor about.

By ImproveIt Health Editorial · 10 April 2026 · 6 min read

Pregnancy changes how your body handles every medicine. A few common pills can directly harm the baby.

Avoid unless a doctor says otherwise

  • Ibuprofen, diclofenac and other NSAIDs, especially in the third trimester
  • Isotretinoin (acne) — strict contraception required
  • Warfarin and several anti-epileptic drugs
  • Tetracycline and doxycycline antibiotics

Usually considered safer

Paracetamol for fever, prescribed iron and folic acid, and doctor-approved antibiotics like amoxicillin. Always confirm with your obstetrician.
