Painkillers, antihistamines, cough syrups and sleep aids can all interact badly with alcohol or impair your reflexes behind the wheel.
Common culprits
- Cetirizine, chlorpheniramine and other older antihistamines
- Codeine-based cough syrups
- Diazepam, alprazolam and similar sedatives
- Tramadol and stronger pain medicines
What to look for on the label
Look for icons or text that read 'avoid alcohol', 'may cause drowsiness' or 'do not drive or operate machinery'. Hindi labels often say 'नींद आ सकती है'.
