Some medicines are designed to be used without a doctor's note. Others can quietly cause serious harm if you skip the prescription.

Usually safe in small doses

  • Paracetamol for short-term fever or pain
  • Oral rehydration salts (ORS) for dehydration
  • Simple antacids for occasional acidity

Avoid without a doctor

  • Antibiotics — wrong choice fuels resistance
  • Steroids, including 'skin lightening' creams
  • Sleeping pills, anti-anxiety tablets, strong painkillers
