How to understand medicine label warnings

Red triangles, schedule H, NRx — a quick decoder for the warnings printed on Indian medicine packs.

By ImproveIt Health Editorial · 13 April 2026 · 5 min read

The symbols on Indian medicine packs aren't decoration — they tell you how serious the prescription is.

Key symbols

  • Red vertical line / Rx — prescription only
  • NRx — narcotic, even stricter rules
  • XRx — psychotropic, controlled supply
  • Red triangle — sedatives, do not drive

Why this matters

If a pharmacist sells you a red-line medicine without asking for a prescription, that's a regulatory violation — and a signal to be cautious.
